About PDF Files

All articles produced for JIPAM are in PDF format. Two PDF versions are supplied for each paper.

The first is designed to be viewed from a 15'' monitor. Where appropriate, the 'monitor' version will use colour and have links within the document and the WWW.

The second is designed to be printed on an A4 page. To print, please use 'Fit to Page'.

To view these files we recommend you save them to your file system and then view by using the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

That is, click on the icon using the 2nd mouse button and select "Save Target As..." (Microsoft Internet Explorer) or "Save Link As..." (Netscape Navigator).

Why PDF?

Mathematical papers are usually typeset in Knuth's TeX system, as are the articles in JIPAM*.  This produces DVI (device independent) files, a page description language that has only crude support for diagrams, graphics etc. The postscript language, which is popular for its power in combining text, graphics etc., results in files that are too large for transmission over the internet. PDF, a form of compressed postscript, has the capability of combining text and graphics as well as support for colour, links and web forms.

To view PDF files, you'll need:

Adobe's PDF reader which is freely available from their web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

Note: Ghostscript (Ghostview) is not suitable for viewing the PDF files due to it's lack of support for some of the PDF features we use.

(*) JIPAM uses Hàn Thê Thành's PDFTeX, which translates TeX directly to PDF.  Adobe Acrobat is then used for the final finishing touches.
