Review: In a series of papers two of the authors were developing a statistical theory of the symmetric groups [see P.Erdös and P.Turán, Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie verw. Gebiete 4, 175-186 (1965; this Zbl 137.25602); Acta math. Acad. Sci. Hungar. 18, 151-163, 309-320 (1967; Zbl 189.31302, Zbl 235.20003)].
In this paper applying the results in the above papers the authors determinethe nmber of the conjugacy-classes in the alternating group An, the number of elements of An whose order is less or equal to a certain limit, and the number of commuting pairs of elements in An.
